So this week, on Wednesday, I found out that my little baby to be is a girl!!! We are thinking of called her Candace. My mother is ecstatic and has already bought many dresses for the little one. It's odd, even before she is born she seems to have so much influence on my life. Even though we haven't seen each other I love her so much and would do any thing for her. Which brought me to an interesting realization when I was reading "The Costs of Getting Ahead: Mexican Family System Changes and Immigration". In this article the researchers interviewed illegal Mexican families living in the US. While I do not condone the families living in the US, I did find it interesting that in most cases the families were in the US so their children could have better lives by learning English and by being educated in US schools. Or in other words, like every other parent, they want what is best for their children. While I cannot support the actions of the parents I understand why they would want to come to the US for their children.

Family History: A benefit you may not know about
Family history has become increasingly popular in today's society. While many like to feel connected to their roots: know where they came from and what royalty they are related to. Other look at their history to find out their genetic make is and if their family is more pron to heart problems or diabetes or autism. But there may be another reason you might want to look into your history. Family relationships also tend to come down through the ages. For example if Jimmy's grandparents divorced and his parents divorced, the likelihood of him getting a divorce is higher. This is because divorce is a learned habit. You do what you know. Or another example is boys that have aggressive fathers are more likely to be aggressive themselves when they get into a relationship. It has also been found that family characteristic go through a four-generation cycle.
But there is hope! Though family history a person can learn about their families or their spouses family characteristics. If their is a pattern that you don't want to continue do not fear! By recognizing that there is something you want to change you have taken the first step to changing it! Of course this goes both ways if you see something awesome in your family that you learned from your parents then you can rejoice and feel grateful.
All in all you can learn a lot by looking into the past of your family.

Demographic Winter
In the video "Demographic Winter" it addresses the issues of population, birth rate, and fertility rate and what that means for the family
Population: total number of people living in a region
Birth Rate: Births per thousand people born in a population during a year
Fertility Rate: Average number of children born over a lifetime of the average women.
To start out with, have you ever wondered why everyone thinks that the earth is going to become over populated? Well the source of this idea came from the book "The Population Bomb" by Dr. Ehrlich. He stated that not only is the world going to over populate but that this would lead to mass starvation and the human race would run out of room. With this idea in mind more parents started to decide to have less or not children. This idea of 'overpopulation' started shortly after WWII, so you may be wondering why is the world population increasing?
First of all in order to grow a population the fertility rate needs to 2.13, a child to replace each parent and then a little to grow. But in the U.S the fertility rate has been under that since 1961. So how are we growing? There are three major factors: 1) children are living. It use to be that many children died at a young age, but now days if a child is born the likelihood of them living is much higher. During the Baby Boom the fertility rate was 3 children to a women, which isn't much, but they were living to adulthood. 2) People are living longer. Since population counts the number of people living in a region then the longer a person lives the more times they are counted. Instead of dying off when they are 40 they are living until 80, so they stick around longer making the population 'grow'. 3) Immigration. Population counts immigrants and their children. Without them the U.S would be in a sorry state. But with the decline of fertility rate which equals the decline of population less people will want to immigrate and then where will we be? Without human capital the economy will crumble, which isn't good for the human family.
This is a very broad overview of the video, but if an economy crumbles then the standard of living will fall for our children, and our children's children. And that is why fertility rate matters. Children are a gift and should be brought into this world.
